Judges will begin poring over a mountain of entries for the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards this weekend.
There were more than 600 entries from regional and local newspapers for the Awards for 2012 which closed last week.

Panels of independent experts start reading the best of British regional journalism under the chairmanship of Paul Horrocks, SoE president in 2007 and former editor of the Manchester Evening News.

The awards celebrate the best of British regional newspaper journalism during 2012. Shortlists will be published on the awards website  in mid-April.

The Society of Editors, which has been supported by Camelot since 2001, organises the awards in conjunction with the Newspaper Society on behalf of the industry.

The Society of Editors Regional Press Awards are made possible by the lead sponsorship of UK Power Networks. They are supported by Asda and Foot Anstey solicitors and are held in association with HoldTheFrontPage and the Press Association.

The winners will be announced at an Oscars-style lunchtime awards ceremony to be held at the Savoy Place, London on 17 May.

Paul Horrocks, chairman of the judges said: “We look forward to reading through the many excellent entries which will once again show the wealth of journalism which the regions produce. It is often where the big stories are broken."

Society of Editors executive director Bob Satchwell said: “I’m sure the judges will be massively impressed with the brilliant work of local journalists who serve their communities day in and day out.”

The Society of Editors represents more than 400 members in national, regional and local newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, digital media, media law and journalism education and campaigns for media freedom, freedom of expression and the public’s right to know.
